Child-Focused, Observation - Led Supervised Access Across Ireland

Supervised access in Ireland is a child-focused arrangement where contact between a child and a parent or other family member takes place with an independent professional present. The professional observes, supports safeguarding, and records factual observations. Where appropriate, the child’s own words and presentation may also be recorded under a Voice of the Child approach.

The Role of the Visit Supervisor in supervised access

The supervisor takes a non-judgmental, supportive approach.

They help coordinate the Family Access Service, support parenting skills, and facilitate parent-child interaction when needed. They stay present throughout to observe and document interactions, encourage appropriate conduct, and redirect inappropriate conduct where possible. They can intervene or end visits if this is in the children’s best interests.
